After an extensive national search led by Partners in Mission School Leadership Search Solutions, Purcell Marian is pleased to announce the appointment of Theodore James Whapham, Ph.D as the next President of Purcell Marian High School. We extend our deepest gratitude to the dedicated members of our Search Committee for their tireless efforts that ensured we identified a leader who embodies the values, vision, and excellence that define Purcell Marian. Dr. Whapham brings with him over two decades of exceptional leadership and executive management experience within the Catholic educational community.

“I could not be more thrilled to welcome Dr. Whapham to Purcell Marian as our next President. For nearly a century, Purcell Marian has been a beacon of inclusivity, academic excellence, and faith formation. With his background, I am confident that Ted will build upon this legacy, fostering a community where students are prepared for lifelong success while rooted in the values that make this school truly special," said Board of Trustees Chairperson Rich Ehemann ‘83.

A passionate educator and scholar, Dr. Whapham holds a Ph.D. in Historical and Systematic Theology and a Master of Arts in Theology/Theological Studies from The Catholic University of America, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from the University of Dayton. His academic background and leadership reflect a deep commitment to faith-based education, aligning perfectly with the Marianist tradition that has shaped Purcell Marian for nearly a century.

Dr. Whapham’s career is distinguished by his extensive experience in both secondary and post-secondary education, where he has served in roles ranging from teaching to executive leadership. Most recently, he orchestrated a transformative reorganization at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, consolidating operations and significantly improving fiscal health as the Director of External Relations and Thriving Congregations Initiative. His strategic acumen, coupled with his deep understanding of Marianist educational values, uniquely positions him to lead Purcell Marian into its next chapter.

Purcell Marian’s mission is rooted in the five Characteristics of Marianist Education—formation in faith, integral quality education, family spirit, service and justice, and adaptation to change. Dr. Whapham’s leadership will further strengthen these pillars, ensuring that Purcell Marian students continue to thrive academically, spiritually, and personally. Moreover, his firsthand experience as a parent in an International Baccalaureate (IB) school makes him a valuable advocate for Purcell Marian’s focus on global education and career initiatives.

Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Dr. Ted Whapham as he assumes the role of President in a full-time capacity on April 22. Under his leadership, we are confident that Purcell Marian High School will continue to thrive as a beacon of faith, education, and community—one that remains “Praestans Inter Omens - Outstanding Among All.”
