The National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association of America, Inc. (NISCA) announced that Purcell Marian senior swimmers Leo Gustavsson and Gavin Weisgerber have been named to the 2025 NISCA Academic All-American team.
According to NISCA statistics, over 353,936 high school students are involved in aquatics in over 17,454 programs for boys and girls. Approximately 2% of these students are recognized as high school All-Americans.
Weisgerber and Gustavsson are the second and third members of the Purcell Marian Class of 2025 to receive All-American honors this season. Senior basketball player Dee Alexander was named to the McDonald’s All-American team earlier this month.
“This is an outstanding honor for both Leo and Gavin,” said head coach Erica Schomaker. “Being named an All-American is a testament to how hard these two work in and out of the water. Gavin and Leo strive for excellence in the pool and the classroom. To have two All-Americans on a team the size of ours is a tremendous accomplishment for the program.”
Gustavsson is an OHSAA Southwest District champion and a two-time State qualifier. In 2024, he finished first in the District meet in the 100 and 200 freestyle. At the 2024 State Championship meet, he brought home two medals after finishing 5th in the 200 freestyle and 6th in the 100 freestyle and was named All-Ohio in both events. In 2023, he was named All-Ohio after finishing 16th in the State meet in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. He is the school record holder in seven events. At PM, Gustavsson has taken multiple College Credit Plus courses in partnership with Cincinnati State and two IB Courses. His weighted GPA is 3.876.
Weisgerber is an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Candidate, the highest academic achievement available for PM students. His weighted GPA is 4.962. During the 2024 season, he qualified for the OHSAA Southwest District meet in the 200 Individual Medley. He will attend Bowling Green State University.
