Marianist Excel Program
The Marianist Excel Program (previously MUSP) was designed with a holistic approach to the education of the child – spiritual, social, intellectual, physical, cultural, and financial. Purcell Marian was the first site of the Marianist Excel Program. The mission of the program is to assist students and their families to achieve success in their education within the Christian atmosphere of an urban high school. Within the program, students receive tuition assistance, participate in enrichment activities, work with the director in academic coaching and goal setting, and explore many other learning and service opportunities. Students are also guided on test preparation, college applications, job searches, and much more. Admittance in the Marianist Excel Program requires an application. First, the student must complete the application to attend Purcell Marian High School and then schedule a shadow visit. Secondly, the student must complete the Marianist Excel Program application, the 150-word essay on why they should be chosen for the Marianist Excel Program, and obtain two letters of recommendation from 7th and/or 8th-grade teachers.
LPP
Founded in memory of Lavatus “Vate” Powell, the Lavatus Powell Program (LPP) was established at Purcell Marian High School in 2000 to help children who have fewer opportunities. Vate was a former Cincinnati Public Schools teacher, an active community leader, and the former vice-president at Procter & Gamble.
The LPP comprehensive programs at Purcell Marian developed by Sister Janet Lintz, help the students develop into well-grounded, enthusiastic young men and women. The students are exposed to an array of mentors, tutors, and supporters who help them with academic courses, social, psychological, and physical growth. Under the leadership of Sister Janet and co-director Julie Wilke, the program and its staff of volunteers help the students establish strong work habits and organizational skills in preparation for their post high school pursuits. The program serves approximately 45 sophomores, juniors, and seniors each year.
